Autumn in Berlin – 21 awesome things to do
If you like it or not, autumn is here, bringing along a whole bunch of cosiness. These days you might find our daily event recommendations are somehow just not fitting your not-so-partyish mood. Therefore we collected 21 activities for you that you could do instead. Now you just have to be willing to leave the house.
1 Radio plays at a planetarium
During autumn, you can listen to radio plays like “The Hound of the Baskerville”, “High Fidelity” or “Treasure Island” at Planetarium am Insulaner. While it gets a little chilly laying outside under the starry sky, the planetarium is always warm and cosy (and you also don’t have to worry about clouds destroying the romantic atmosphere).
2 Wellness day at Spa Vabali
If you’re craving quiet relaxation and the tub at home isn’t doing it for you (or if you don’t even have one), Spa Vabali will make you happy. Wellness, a sauna, pools and a fantastic outdoor area - not just in St. Peter-Ording, but now also in Moabit. In the summertime it feels like you’re on Bali.
3 Picking mushrooms at Grunewald
Picking mushrooms is one of the best fall activities and Grunewald a perfect place for it. If you go, don’t forget to take a book about mushrooms with you, otherwise you might end up eating poisonous ones. In Germany, there are about 1200 kinds of mushrooms, about 90 percent are edible, but only a quarter of them is tasty.
4 Enjoy the view at Grunewald
If you are at Grunewald anyway, you should definitely stop at Grunewaldturm (Grunewald tower). From up there you’ll have a great view over the forest. If you’re too lazy going up, there is a nice restaurant at the bottom of the tower as well.
5 Dancing Salsa at Clärchens Ballhaus
During the summer months, people were dancing in front of Monbijoutheater, now they continue moving at Clärchens Ballhaus. Most nights of the week you can learn to dance swing, tango or set-pattern dance here. The best day to go, however, is on Mondays when they give an introduction to Salsa for free. They also host classic concerts in a really pretty room, called Spiegelsaal. Fancy!
6 Indoor flea market in Treptow
Even though you’re not planning to buy anything, visiting the indoor flea market in Treptow is always an adventure: loads and loads of vintage stuff to look at. Please note: Indoors does not mean warm, so you better bring a coat.
7 Cooking made easy
When it’s cold outside, there is nothing more heart warming than cooking with friends at home, but food shopping for several people can be quite exhausting. Kochhaus offers an easy way to deal with this problem. Here, you’ll find various recipes along with all the ingredients you need. If Kochhaus is too far away, order your ingredients online at Kochhaus.de or Marley Spoon.
8 Go to a soccer game
Of course, not everybody loves soccer and/or favors Berlin’s teams. Nonetheless, you should go and see a game of Hertha BSC or 1. FC Union Berlin. At the stadium, there is more cheering and dancing than at Berghain 4am in the morning on a Saturday. Plus, the stadium at Alte Försterei is supposed to be really pretty.
9 Take a tour at BER
Berlin’s new airport Berlin Brandenburg looks completed already, but it remains unknown when the first planes will take off from here. If you want to have a look at what everyone is talking about, join one of the many tours (by bus, by bike, by day, by night). You better register some days beforehand, otherwise you might not get a ticket.
10 Picnic at Schöneberger Südgelände
When the trees are all orange and gold, you better hurry to get to Schöneberger Südgelände. The park there is really beautiful and perfect for a nice autumn picnic.
11 Read more
Cafés are not only made for coffee but also for book lovers. The best places to eat and read are Café Tasso at Frankfurter Allee or Buchkantine, Moabit. If you prefer getting read to: Check out the readings at Dussmann Kulturkaufhaus, Friedrichsstraße. They are for free.
12 Fly a kite
Go to Teufelsberg, where you’ll have an amazing view over Berlin, or stop at Tempelhofer Feld to fly a kite. It’s fun and it will make you love the windy weather for once.
13 Indoor beach volleyball
At first sight, the words indoor and beachvolleyball don’t seem to fit together. But in Berlin, nothing is impossible. So if you ever feel like doing summer sports during autumn, the BeachCenter is your spot.
14 Coffee and music at Gordon’s
There probably is no better combination in the world than coffee and music. At Café Gordon you’ll not only find food and drinks but also a nice selection of vinyls.
15 Go for a walk
Grab your coat and a good friend and go for a stroll along Landwehrkanal, Tiergarten or walk to one of Berlin’s beautiful cemeteries. Fresh air!
16 See a ballet show
The best way to get into the perfect mood for winter and christmas (yes, this is what comes right after autumn) is with “The Nutcracker” (and we don’t mean this crappy Barbie-movie-thing). At the end of November, you can go and see the ballet at Neue Deutsche Oper.
17 Take a tour to Berlin's underground world
You already know what Berlin looks like above the ground, but you might not have seen it’s underground bunkers. Take a tour with Berliner Unterwelten e.V., they even do them in English or Spanish.
18 Go to a museum
Berlin has more than 175 museums. You could basically do nothing else for the next hundered weekends than visiting them. For starters, we recommend a visit at Naturkundemuseum (dinosaurs, animals olé!), where you can easily spend a day to see it all. If you don’t have that much time or if you are not such a big fan of animals, Computerspielemuseum at Karl-Marx-Allee might suit you better.
19 Exhibition at Kindl Brauerei
If you’ve seen Sammlung Boros already, Kindl Brauerei is a nice and new exhibition alternative for you. For years, the building in Neukölln remained empty but has now been turned into a place for art.
20 Brunch at Ohlala Geschlossen
To make your autumn weekends look and taste even better, plan to have a vegan, gluten-free and very tasty brunch at Café Ohlala, Friedrichshain. You can either go Saturday or Sunday.
21 Visit a deer park
If you’re free all day, make a day-trip to the deer park “Wildpark Schorfheide”. It’s only about an hours away from Berlin (by car).
